The sounds of marches met with ballads and dance pieces as the Southeast Concert Band and Southeast Wind Ensemble entertained the crowd Thursday night at the Bedell Performance Hall.

The Southeast Concert Band started off the night with a John Philip Sousa march, "The Free Lance March." The piece set the scene for the entire evening's theme of "War and Peace."

Each piece performed by the Southeast Concert Band was directed by student conductors. Kara Brown, Geoff Huff, Nichole Hotop, Jennifer Miler, Justin Wibbenmeyer and Robert Davis each took a turn conducting.

After a short intermission, the Southeast Wind Symphony took the stage. Its first selection was Samuel Barber's "Commando March."

"We love the theme of this show," said Karen Bergher of Cape Girardeau. "My husband is a military guy, and the music took us from the field of battle to the peaceful homefronts."
