JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Southeast Missouri State and Jacksonville State decided to follow suit with the rest of the sporting world Saturday, getting into a very physical game filled with personal fouls during a contest that JSU dominated 47-9.
The Gamecocks (9-1, 7-1) wrapped up their second straight Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship and will be in the Division I-AA playoffs beginning Saturday.
Southeast (3-8, 3-5) ended its season.
Penalties plagued both teams, with Southeast getting 11 penalties for 116 yards and JSU just above that with 14 for 175 yards.
"This was a poorly played game on both sides," Southeast coach Tim Billings said. "They made a lot of big plays and we just got behind."
Southeast never really got in its groove, giving up several huge plays to the Gamecocks, including JSU's first play of the game: a 30-yard pass from Maurice Mullins to back Oscar Bonds, most of which Bonds picked up after the catch.
Bonds had 10 carries for 128 yards and two catches for 53 yards, and he scored two touchdowns. Craig Agee led the Gamecocks with five catches for 156 yards and a score and 62 return yards.
Mullins had a career day with 200 yards passing and a touchdown, which came on an 84-yard strike to Agee late in the first quarter. Mullins completed 10 of 14 passes.
Southeast's first series started slow with a three-and-out. JSU's first drive ended on a 3-yard run TD from Raynodd Zeine for a 7-0 lead just 2:51 into the first quarter.
Mullins' 84-yard TD pass to Agee late in the first quarter made it 14-0. Bonds' 77-yard TD run early in the second period put JSU up 21-0.
Southeast got its only points until late in the game on a 25-yard field goal by Derek Kutz with 4:41 left before halftime. It was 21-3 at the intermission.
JSU scored four straight second-half touchdowns to go up 47-3. Southeast backup quarterback Mike Haley led a 56-yard scoring drive that ended in Adam Casper's 1-yard run with 4:20 remaining.
The Gamecocks piled up 548 yards of offense and held Southeast to just 233 yards.
Southeast quarterback Andrew Goodenough struggled, completing 18 of 41 passes for 124 yards with four interceptions. Goodenough's longest completion was a mere 14 yards.
Haley completed two of four passes for 59 yards. Ray Goodson and Brian Matthews each caught five passes. Oliver was Southeast's leading rusher with 42 yards on 10 carries.
Southeast punter David Simonhoff, ranked second nationally, averaged 49.5 yards on eight punts.
Linebacker Tunde Agboke led Southeast tacklers with 11 stops, followed by safety Reggie AuBuchon with nine.
