Six Southeast Missouri State University alumni received alumni merit awards at Saturday's winter commencement luncheon at the Show Me Center. The Alumni Association presented the awards.
Each Alumni Merit Award is presented by an academic college at Southeast to honor a distinguished alumna or alumnus. The awards have been give since 1958 to graduates or former students of Southeast who have brought distinction to themselves and the university.
Earl Holland received the Alumni Merit Award from the Donald L. Harrison College of Business.
Holland, a native of Caruthersville, is a 1968 graduate of Southeast. He graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration degree, marketing major. Currently, he is the vice chairman for Health Management Associates Inc., in Naples, Fla. He and his wife, Margie, live in Ft. Myers, Fla. They have three children.
Paul Copeland received the award from the College of Education. A 1956 graduate of Southeast, he earned a bachelor of science in education degree with a major in physical education.
He obtained a master's degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and continued his education by completing course work for a specialist degree from the University of Missouri at St. Louis and Southeast. Before retiring, he served as principal for several school districts including the Union School District in Union. He is active in many volunteer efforts, including public speaking for the scholarship which bears his name at Southeast Missouri State. He and his wife, Mary, live in Union and are the parents of two children.
Teri McCarthy received the Merit Award from the College of Health and Human Services. She is a 1965 graduate of Southeast where she earned an associate of arts degree in nursing.
In 1971, she received a bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Louis University. The following year she graduated from Washington University with a master's degree in clinical social work. She directs the St. Louis University Employee Health Program. She also has a number of publications and presentations to her credit. She and her husband, Jack, currently live in Frontenac. She is the mother of two children.
Martha Schuchart-Sachs, received the Alumni Merit Award from the College of Liberal Arts. She graduated from Southeast in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree in education with a major in English. She taught at a number of schools before joining the military in 1942. During her tenure in the U.S. Army, she was promoted from the rank of private to lieutenant colonel and received numerous commendations. She retired from the military in 1967. She and her husband, Abner, live in Arlington, Va.
The College of Science and Technology presented its award to Danold Golightly. He graduated from Southeast in 1962 with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry. He went on to receive both a master's degree and a doctoral degree in chemistry from Iowa State University in 1965 and 1967, respectively. He has worked at a number of laboratories around the world and is currently employed by Abbott Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio, where he is the senior research scientist and senior group leader. He has also authored and edited a number of publications and has served as a reviewer of works in his specialized field. He and his wife, Marilyn, live in Upper Arlington, Ohio, and are the parents of a daughter.
Bryce March received the Alumni Merit Award from the Polytechnic Institute. March graduated from Southeast in 1951. He received a bachelor of science degree in education with a major in industrial arts and completed course work in the earth science area. He earned both a master's and doctoral degree from Southern Illinois University. Before retiring, he chaired the industrial technology and education department at Southeast and served as assistant to the president for nine years. He also has served as the vice president for the Alumni Association for three years. He and his wife, Dorothy, live in Cape Girardeau and are the parents of three children.
