South Side Optimists receive official charter

The newly formed South Side Optimist Club was presented with its official charter by Eric Pahl, governor of the East Missouri District of Optimist International Club, at a banquet Saturday.

The club, organized in December, will conduct a variety of activities for the area's youths and community.

A future goal includes providing youths of the south side of Cape Girardeau with access to a recreational facility for after-school use.

Members and guests in attendance at the banquet held at the University Center ballroom on Southeast Missouri State University campus numbered nearly 100. Area children performed a dance to the song, "I Believe." A motivational speech by Dr. Anthony Green, pastor of Rhema Word Breakthrough International Ministries, was given and a silent and live auction were held.

Officers installed by Pahl and Cape Girardeau Evening Optimist president Charlie Harrison were: Marvin McBride, president; Amanda Becker, secretary; Cherle Hillman, treasurer; Quantella Anderson and Deborah McBride, vice presidents.

Nationally, Optimist Clubs conduct service programs which directly benefit more than 6 million young people annually. Optimist Clubs back up their motto, "Bringing Out the Best in Kids," by conducting programs including but not limited to, the Childhood Cancer Campaign, substance abuse prevention, the Optimist oratorical contest, the Optimist essay contest, Youth Appreciation Week and the Optimist Junior Golf Championships.

The 38 charter members of the club will be inducted at a future meeting.
