Southeast Missouri State University will present a concert, Sounds of the Horn, with guest artist Matthew Meadows on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the River Campus in Cape Girardeau.
Meadows plays in the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera in Tennessee and the Meridian Symphony Orchestra in Mississippi. He is a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Alabama where he is earning his Doctor of Music Arts in Horn.
Nicholas Kenney, professor of music-horn and assistant director of bands at SEMO, said Meadows recently won a position with Pershing's Own, the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C.
"It's very difficult to win those positions and is an incredible honor for Matthew," Kenney said. "We are very happy to have him come and perform with us and work with our students."
Kenney said Thursday's concert will be a celebration of the horn -- specifically the French horn. He said Meadows will play solo on multiple pieces including "Villanelle" by Paul Dukas, "Secret Winter" by Amir Zaheri and "Fantasy for Horn" by Malcolm Arnold.
Kenney will join Meadows in a horn duet called "Majaliwa" by Paul Basler and the SEMO student Horn Choir will join him in a piece called "Harvest Light" by James Naigus. Barbara Lamont, associate professor of music and director of choirs at SEMO, will provide piano accompaniment and serve a guest conductor.
The concert will start at 6 p.m. at Shuck Music Recital Hall in the River Campus seminary building at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau.
