The Cape Girardeau Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend granting a special use permit to let a drive-through fast food restaurant open at the corner of William and Broadview.
The commission held a special meeting Wednesday night to hear the request from Jerry and Sandy McClane and D&G Properties Inc., to open a Sonic restaurant at the intersection.
City planner Kent Bratton said the zoning code requires a special use permit for all restaurants with drive-ins or drive-throughs because of the impact on surrounding traffic patterns.
The application calls for a 21-stall drive-in restaurant with a drive-through. The entrance to the restaurant would be from Broadview.
Residents who live behind the proposed site protested the application, saying the restaurant would create extra noise, traffic, light and trash.
The site plan for the restaurant shows green space ranging from 80 feet to more than 200 feet between the restaurant site and neighboring residential property.
The commission voted unanimously to recommend granting the special use permit. The City Council will hold a public hearing on the request at its Aug. 3 meeting.
