Snow, then snow - now rain and snow in the forecast

Cape Girardeau received a bit more than three inches of snow Friday evening into Saturday as a second round of winter weather swept through the region. More rain and snow are expected Monday, the National Weather Service said.

A storm system began as rain slowly moved north and east Friday afternoon, dropping rain and snow across the region. Snow amounts ranged from about two inches near Poplar Bluff, Mo., to more than six inches in Mount Vernon, Ill., and areas east.

The first winter system, which caused forecasters to issue blizzard warnings for Christmas night, was not as strong as predicted but did drop several inches of wet, heavy snow across the area.

Michael York, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., on Saturday said it was too early to predict the amount of snow the area may receive Monday, but some measurable snow is expected.

Precipitation Monday likely be rain before noon followed by some freezing rain and snow into the evening and night, according to National Weather Service forecast models.
