A snowstorm last week gave area students a weeklong break from class. But for some area districts, that means fewer days off for spring break and a longer wait for summer vacation.

The Cape Girardeau School District's spring break was scheduled for April 2, 3 and 6, but classes were canceled four days last week after nearly a foot of snow fell on the area. The district's first makeup day will be April 2.

"Last year, we changed the calendar to protect the Friday and Monday so that we would not use those for makeup days," superintendent Jim Welker said, adding it helps families when they plan their spring breaks.

The remaining days will be added to the end of the school year, starting May 20, 21 and 22. Any additional makeup days would begin after Memorial Day on May 26.

At the Jackson School District, classes also were canceled four times last week. Its spring break, scheduled to begin April 1 and end April 7, will be shortened by three days.

Makeup days listed on the district's calendar include March 20, as well as April 1, 2 and 7. Remaining days will be added to the end of the school year, beginning May 26.

At the Oak Ridge School District, students were to attend class on Presidents Day to make up another missed day from earlier in the school year.

Superintendent Gerald Landewee said the students have a total of six days that need to be made up.

Spring break was to be April 3 through 6, but the first makeup day on the district's calendar is scheduled for April 6. The other days will be tacked on to the end of the school year, beginning May 18.

The Scott City School District has made up two snow days, said Beth Cox, president of the school board. But they have another four days to make up.

Students will lose two days of their spring break, scheduled for April 2 through 6. Makeup days include March 20, April 2 and 6, and any remaining snow days would begin May 21.

The Delta School District will begin making up its four snow days starting April 6 and 7, which were to be part of the school's spring break. Students still will be off April 3.

May 18, 19 and 20 also are listed as makeup days, and any additional days missed will be added to the end of the school year.
