SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Southwest Missouri State University's Board of Governors voted unanimously Friday to support an effort by lawmakers to change the institution's name to Missouri State University.

State Reps. Craig Hosmer, D-Springfield; B.J. Marsh, R-Springfield; and House Speaker Jim Kreider, D-Nixa, said they plan to introduce a bill next week to change the school's name.

The delegation sent a letter to the Board of Regents this week seeking support for the change, seen by advocates as key to raising the university's stature.

It is the school's third attempt in about 20 years to remove the multidirectional description from its name.
