Six Southeast Missouri State University alumni will be honored at the school's commencement ceremonies on May 17. Six Southeast Missouri State University alumni will be honored at the school's commencement ceremonies on May 17.

The six will receive the 2003 Young Alumni Merit awards, presented by the school's alumni association.

The winners are Trent Ball of Cape Girardeau, Scott Carlton of Northville, Mich., Scott Spindler of Belleville, Ill., Kimberly Bowie of Tucson, Ariz., Dr. Yvette Patmore Fobian of Wildwood, Mo., and David Welker of Festus, Mo.

They will be honored at a commencement luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center and at commencement exercises at 2 p.m. in the Show Me Center, school officials said.

The awards are given annually to alumni under the age of 36 who have brought distinction to the university through professional growth, service and individual character. An award is presented to an alumna or alumnus of each academic college at Southeast.

Ball, who received a degree in psychological counseling in 1994, is assistant dean of students at the university. He is the award winner from the College of Education.

Carlton, general manager for Microsoft Corp., is the award recipient from the Harrison College of Business. He received a computer science degree in 1988.

Spindler, system safety manager for the Air Force, graduated in 1988 with a criminal justice degree. He is the award winner from the College of Health and Human Services.

Bowie is associate director of development for the Arizona Theatre Co. A 1989 graduate in mass communication, she is the award winner from the College of Liberal Arts.

Fobian, a senior research scientist for Pharmacia Corp., received a chemistry degree in 1989. She is the award winner from the College of Science and Mathematics.

Welker, manager of manufacturing for Little Tikes Play Systems, graduated in 1988 with an industrial technology degree. He is the award winner from the School of Polytechnic Studies.
