Six Cape Girardeau Central High School teen-agers heading into their senior years will attend the 55th session of Girls State, scheduled for June 16-22 at William Woods University in Fulton.

Applicants are chosen for their high moral character, good sportsmanship and outstanding leadership abilities. Girls State, an educational program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, is composed of mock cities and counties set up to teach young people constructive attitudes toward American government.

The 700 participants elect city, county and state officials and learn the duties of various public offices.

The Cape Girardeau girls selected for participation and their sponsors:

-- Leslie Goehring, the daughter of David and Joan Goehring, is sponsored by the Breakfast Optimist Club. Goehring is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students and has been active in Beta Club, National Honor Society, the pom pon squad, choir, Red Dagger and Spanish Club. She is a member of Lynwood Baptist Church.

-- Elizabeth Green is a member of Central's swim team, Chamber Choir, Art Club, National Honor Society, Beta Club and Spanish Club. She received the Girl Scout Silver Award in 1994 and is certified in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid. She is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, and she will be listed in Who's Who this year.

-- Julie Christine Illers, daughter of Dave and Gloria Illers, is sponsored by the Exchangettes Club. She has been a cheerleader for the past four years and is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta Club and Spanish Club. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Illers has been selected by Who's Who for scholastic achievement.

-- Suzanne Templeton is sponsored by the American Legion Post 63 Auxiliary. She has been involved in choir, Spanish Club and Red Dagger, and she tutors after school at May Greene Elementary. Templeton has been a referee for the Cape Area Youth Soccer Association and is a member of the youth group at Lynwood Baptist Church.

-- Sarah Goin, the daughter of Jerry and Sherry Goin, is sponsored by the Cape Evening Optimist Club. She is active in the Lynwood Baptist Church Youth Group and works at Chateau Girardeau. At Central High, Goin is a member of Red Dagger and the International Thespians.

-- Brooke Endicott Spradling, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Spradling III, is sponsored by the Lions Club. In her junior year, she was active in varsity volleyball and basketball, soccer, swimming, Beta Club and Younglife. This summer, she will attend Southwest Missouri State University's basketball camp and be on the work crew for Younglife's Trail West camp in Colorado.
