Mrs. K is a survivor.
She has survived an unhappy marriage and pulled through critical health crises that no doctor expected her to survive.
She has trouble walking, but she still gets up bright and early and is ready to go during garage sale season.
Mrs. K likes bright and cheerful surroundings, said the Health Department nurse who visits her, and she loves country music. Considering her critical health needs, which include diabetes, cardiac problems and poor vision, said the nurse, Mrs. K is a miracle.
Mrs. K would like size small, brightly colored sweatsuits to wear to the garage sales. Her Christmas wish list also includes glass for the doors in her china cabinet. She wouldn't mind a VCR -- used is fine -- she'd just like something to watch movies on.
She also needs food for herself and her cat and dog, and kitty litter would also be appreciated.
Christmas for the Elderly works to provide people with special requests that many people take for granted. Food, cab coupons, toiletries, simple paper products and money for medications are just a few of the donations that would make an elderly person's entire year easier.
The program is in its 12th year and is co-sponsored by Cape Girardeau County Health Services and the Southeast Missourian.
Gifts may be delivered to the Southeast Missourian or the Cape Girardeau County Health Center through Dec. 13.
Cash contributions, cab coupons, paper products and grocery store gift certificates are always needed and may help elderly people all year long.
Contributions may be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63702-0699.
