Sikeston woman arrested in baby's death

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A Sikeston woman was arrested Thursday accused of killing the baby girl of a friend.

Latoya Marie Fletcher is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Sept. 17 death of Octavia Nyshae Clark, 5 months.

Police officers give this account:

The baby girl was last seen alive sleeping in bed, at 1 a.m. By 7:15 a.m., the mother found the child was not breathing and called 911. Emergency workers tried to revive the child, but she was pronounced dead at the Missouri Delta Medical Center.

After finding a plastic trash bag on the floor next to the child's bed, police began a criminal investigation.

Officers said Fletcher, who is being held without bond, confessed Wednesday to killing the girl. They did not give a motive.
