Sikeston police think school bomb scare may have been accidental

SIKESTON, Mo. —A bomb scare this morning at Sikeston High School may have been caused completely by accident, according to a news release from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Sikeston police were called to the high school just after 6:30 a.m., when a teacher noticed a box sitting in front of the school's Math and Science Center. The box, made to hold copy paper, had a note on it that said "good luck," according to the news release.

Sikeston police blocked off the area and directed students away from the location while the Southeast Missouri Regional Bomb Squad used a robot to open the box around 9:15 a.m. Inside were miscellaneous books and papers, according to police reports.

"At present, we do not believe the box was placed to purposely frighten anyone; however the matter is still under investigation," Sikeston police Sgt. James McMillen said in a news release.
