SIKESTON, Mo. -- A Sikeston Department of Public Safety officer was hospitalized Sunday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.
The incident began at about 4 p.m. when numerous people were reported fighting in the area of Clayton and Williams streets, according to Capt. Jim McMillen, public information officer.
Before officers arrived at the scene, McMillen said, someone shot a firearm into the crowd. No one was injured in the shooting, and the assailant fled the scene.
McMillen said officers began tracking a man and located him in a nearby house.
As officers surrounded the house, a Sikeston officer attempted to draw his gun. "Apparently the weapon discharged, shooting him in his leg," McMillen said.
The officer was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center for treatment and is expected to recover.
