Sikeston police arrest man on warrant after 45-minute standoff

SIKESTON, Mo. — A 45-minute police standoff Thursday ended with the arrest of a Sikeston man wanted on a misdemeanor warrant.

Around 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Sikeston Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers were called to 210 Jackson St. for a disturbance between a father and son who were arguing in front of their home when officers arrived, according to a news release from DPS. Upon seeing a DPS patrol car, the son, who was aware of a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest through the Sikeston City Court, ran inside the home and barricaded himself in a bedroom. The warrant was issued after the son failed to comply with a judge's order on a driving while suspended charge from January.

The father identified his son as 21-year-old Ricky D. Davis Jr., of Sikeston and told officers his son had a knife and was threatening to harm himself.

Officers spoke with Davis for some time, trying to get him to give himself up. With continued threats to harm himself, police brought in the Special Operations Group and the Negotiations Team. Davis continued to make threats and refused to exit the room. The Special Operations Group made the decision to force open the bedroom door after Davis refused to surrender. Davis was arrested 45 minutes after the standoff began.

"Situations such as this are extremely dangerous for law enforcement," said Sgt. Jim McMillen of Sikeston Department of Public Safety. "We want to end these standoffs without injury to suspects or officers. Our city is very fortunate to have these trained teams in place to help resolve incidents like this peacefully."
