A 23-year-old Sikeston, Missouri, man was shot several times and taken to a hospital Wednesday morning.

Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers responded about 10:30 a.m. to the 700 block of Montgomery Street and found the man with gunshot wounds to his torso and legs, according to a news release from the department. At last report, the victim was undergoing surgery.

Sikeston officers and the SEMO Major Case Squad began investigating the shooting, finding a 29-year-old suspect a short time later in the 500 block of Malcolm Street who named the victim, according to the release. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, the release stated.

Police are conducting interviews and collecting evidence. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, according to the release.
