BENTON -- A former U.S. Postal Service supervisor from Sikeston has filed as a Democratic candidate for Scott County assessor.

Jim McGee, 56, filed last Thursday for the post, his first attempt in the political arena. His filing sets up a primary contest with incumbent Gerald Inman, who has served as county assessor since 1976.

McGee said he has no criticism of Inman's performance as assessor. "I'm just saying it's time for new blood to be brought into the system there."

He added, "It's something that I would like to do."

McGee worked for the postal service in Sikeston and the surrounding area for 34 years before retiring in November 1990.

"My background is dealing with people," he said. "I think I will be able to deal with the people in the county."
