Sikeston man arrested after kidnapping

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- A Sikeston man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend was caught Tuesday when an alert clerk at a hotel recognized he was up to no good, police said.

Police throughout Southeast Missouri had been on the lookout for Tyrone Handberry, 28, all day after Sikeston Department of Public Safety had sent out a bulletin to law enforcement agencies.

Handberry was considered armed and dangerous after police were told he had kidnapped his girlfriend at knifepoint Tuesday morning.

According to Poplar Bluff police, about 7 p.m., Handberry attempted to check into the Super 8 Hotel, but couldn't provide identification when he tried to write a check.

The clerk, who had learned about the kidnapper from the radio or television, called police.

Poplar Bluff officers arrived on the scene and detained Handberry until police from Sikeston could arrive.

The kidnapping victim appeared unharmed, police said.

Handberry was transported back to Sikeston and is expected to be charged with several crimes, police said.
