Alma Schrader is the next Cape Girardeau school to get new sidewalks.
The federally funded Safe Routes to School program has allowed the city recently to build new sidewalks near Franklin Elementary School, Central Middle School and Central Junior High School.
Work on construction of sidewalks within the Alma Schrader Elementary School boundaries will begin this week. The area to receive sidewalks includes the east side of Kingsway Drive. Work will start at Janet Drive and continue north to Kurre Lane.
Kingsway will remain open to traffic, although the city says drivers may experience delays as they travel through the work area. Drivers are encouraged to avoid using that area of Kingsway if possible.
The project is expected to take about four months, depending on weather, and will be completed by Nip Kelley Equipment Co.
Construction also will begin in the coming weeks on sidewalks along west Kingsway south from Janet Drive to the Food Giant driveway. That section will be funded by Transportation Trust Fund 4. The two sections of sidewalks will connect with a new crosswalk at Janet Drive.
Nip Kelley submitted the lowest bids for two contracts related to the projects -- one bid of $138,943.90 for the Safe Routes to School project and a bid of $107,492 for the city-funded portion of the Kingsway sidewalk project. Cape Girardeau City Council members approved an agreement with the company in May.
