A Cape Girardeau man injured in a June 7 shooting has been charged with second-degree assault and first-degree property damage in connection with the altercation that led to his injuries, police said.
Andrew McClendon, 29, who police said was shot in the chest during an altercation on Kingsway Drive, is in the Cape Girardeau County Jail on $50,000 bond, Sgt. Rick Schmidt of the Cape Girardeau Police Department confirmed Sunday.
While responding to a call about shots fired, an officer stopped a vehicle driving recklessly at the intersection of Themis Street and Clark Avenue and found a shooting victim in the passenger's seat, police reported.
Officers connected the two incidents and obtained a search warrant for a house at 1467 Kingsway Drive, where the shooting was believed to have occurred.
Police have said the two men in the car went to the house with the intent of attacking a man there.
"They went there with the intent to assault this person, and he allegedly defended himself and ended up shooting one of them," Sgt. Jason Selzer of the Cape Girardeau Police Department told the Southeast Missourian last week.
Selzer said last week the case was still under investigation, and police had not decided whether to file charges against the shooter.
Schmidt confirmed rumors that police had responded to another call at the same property early Saturday morning.
He said the house had been damaged by bullet holes.
No additional information was available Sunday evening.
The assault charge is not McClendon's first run-in with law enforcement. Online court records show that in September 2002, he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and second-degree robbery, and in November 2002, he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. He was given concurrent sentences of seven years in prison on the robbery charge, five years on the assault charge and three years on the controlled substance charge.
