JACKSON, Mo. -- Lt. J.P. Mulcahy of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department was awarded the Timothy J. Ruopp Award on Friday as the outstanding officer in the department, Sheriff John Jordan said.

Mulcahy, who serves as a jail officer, started his career with the department in 1992.

The Ruopp award has been given annually since 1984 in honor of Timothy Ruopp, a past employee of the department who was killed in the line of duty as an officer in San Diego, Calif.

Several members of the Ruopp family attended Friday's ceremony.

Also, three Copeland Excellence awards were presented to one employee in each of the three operations at the department. Deputy Nancy Davis won in field operations, communications officer Kendra Shell won in business operations, and Brad Stotler won in jail operations.

The Copeland awards have been given since 1995 in honor of former sheriff Norman Copeland.
