Cape Girardeau's Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the Shawnee Park Center's grand opening at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
The Shawnee Park Center is the newest addition to the city's recreation facilities, joining the A.C. Brase Arena and Osage Centre. All are invited to attend the ceremony and see the new 14,541-square-foot center. Admission will be $2.
Building amenities include: 6,500-square-foot gym, 870-square-foot fitness room, 720-square-foot activity room, 1,540-square-foot meeting room and a full-service kitchen. The hours of operation will be 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Funding for the project came from a parks and storm water sales tax, passed by local voters in 2008. Youth after-school programs, open and league basketball and volleyball and summer camps will be available. Playground equipment will be added at a later date. Summer trips to city facilities are planned.
