Just before 7 p.m. on May 21, 1949, a tornado ripped through Cape Girardeau, touching down on Gordonville Road and continuing northeast to near Cape Rock. Before the tornado was over, 22 people were killed and 72 others hospitalized.
In all, 202 houses were leveled.
