Carroll entered his guilty plea Monday to two counts of first-degree statutory sodomy out of the original 12 counts he was charged with arising out of events in Scott County, according to Scott County assistant prosecutor Paul R. Boyd. This offense carries from five to 30 years or life if the victim is under 14 years old and from 10 to 30 years or life if the victim is under age 12. Boyd said statutory sodomy in the first degree involves deviate sexual intercourse with another person under age 14.

"During his confession to Detective John Blakely, Carroll admitted he needed help and if he were allowed out of jail, he would continue to do similar acts because he could not help himself," Boyd said.

He said a civil commitment will likely be pursued by the Missouri attorney general's office to confine Carroll to a facility for predatory sex offenders for the rest of his life.

Carroll is a prior felony sex offender, having pleaded guilty in 1990 in Cape Girardeau County to first-degree sexual misconduct and prostitution. In that case, he received a two-year suspended sentence with two years of probation.
