Sewer construction work will cause detours on Broadway between Fountain and Pacific streets, beginning next week.
Most of the work will be on the north side of Broadway. The work will be done a block at a time, said Mark Lester, Cape Girardeau city engineer.
Westbound motorists will be detoured around the construction. Eastbound traffic won't be interrupted.
On-street parking along Broadway will be prohibited where construction is occurring.
The entire project is expected to take six to eight weeks. Robinson Construction of Perryville is the contractor on the project.
The project involves construction of new sewer lines to provide for separate sanitary and storm sewers.
Work on the sewer improvements in the older sections of the city began about four years ago. The city expects to spend $27 million by the time all the work has been completed.
