Severe storms could develop over Southeast Missouri today and into Wednesday, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

According to a weather service hazardous weather outlook issued Monday, a slight risk of severe thunderstorms exists tonight into early Wednesday in advance of a strong cold front. Short-lived tornadoes can't be ruled out, the outlook states.

Locally heavy rainfall also is possible.

The high temperature in Cape Girardeau was expected to reach the low- to mid-60s Monday and the upper 60s today before falling back into the 40s after the cold front sweeps through. Normal highs in late January are in the low 40s.
