Several area roads flood during Sunday downpour

Several county roads and major intersections throughout Southeast Missouri were flooded when heavy rains fell around 9 p.m. Sunday night.

A severe thunderstorm dropped .83 inches of rain on the region in under an hour, according to the National Weather Service's Web site.

The National Weather Service is forecasting thunderstorms and some periods of heavy rain through Thursday.

Sheriff's departments in Bollinger, Cape Girardeau and Perry counties reported some flooding on secondary roads Sunday.

There was some storm damage in southern Bollinger County, but its extent was unknown, a dispatcher at the sheriff's department said.

Cape Girardeau police responded to two calls of vehicles flooded in intersections that had filled with water. Low spots on several major roads were flooded during the rain, though the water did recede.

Scott County seemed to be hit the hardest by the storm, particularly near Morley.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department reported power outages, and wind damage that included trees and debris over the road around Morley. Several areas along U.S. 61 had water covering the road. Parts of Interstate 55 also had water covering the roadway.
