Seventeen area teenagers will be among 960 attending the 1994 Missouri Boys State. It will start Saturday, and run through June 25.

The leadership program is held each year on the Campus of Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg.

It was established by the Missouri American Legion in 1938 as a way to give young Missourians a practical working knowledge of state government. Boys State employs the "learn by doing" method with instruction and first-hand experiences in law, law enforcement, legislature, journalism, government executive and campaigning.

Young men exhibiting outstanding leadership, character, scholarship, and citizenship are chosen by the American Legion and other civic groups throughout the state.

One hundred boys in 10 Southeast Missouri counties were selected to attend. Tom Giles of Cape Girardeau is the American Legion chairman for Boys State District 14.

Among the area representatives are:

Jeff Riley

At Cape Central High School, he is a member of Beta Club, Letterman's Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, student council, A honor roll, National Honor Society. He is also in "Who's Who Among American High School Students," Scholar's Academy and an Eagle Scout. He is sponsored by Cape Rotary Club. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. Riley of Cape Girardeau.

Brad Halter

He will be a senior at Notre Dame High School this fall. He is a member of the varsity baseball team, played junior varsity basketball and is a member of the concert choir and SADD. He is sponsored by Knights of Columbus, Cape Girardeau Council. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. David Halter of Cape Girardeau.

Vincent A. Collier

He is a member of the National Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America and National Honor Society at Cape Central High School. He is sponsored by Cape Rotary Club. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David D. Collier.

Greg Stevens

He is a student at Notre Dame High School, on the A honor roll, member of SADD, and was on the school play stage crew. He is employed at Wendy's. He is sponsored by American Legion Post 389. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Stevens Jr. of Cape Girardeau.

Corey Wright

He is active as a member of student council, Red Dagger, marching band, jazz band and concert band. He is currently student body President at Cape Central High School, a member of Explorer post 4077, an Eagle Scout and a member of Grace United Methodist Church where is an active of their youth group. He is sponsored by Cape Girardeau Noon Optimist. His parents are Steve and Kathy Wright.

Jeremy Freeman

He will be a senior at Cape Central High School this fall where he is a member of the BETA Club, student council, Latin Club, Future Business Leaders of America and is senior class secretary. He sings in Senior High Chamber Choir, is a Varsity letterman in both track and football. He is also an Eagle Scout. He is sponsored by American Legion Post 63. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kent S. Freeman of Cape Girardeau.

Greg Hutteger

He attends Cape Central High School and is enrolled in the academic honor program and is on the A honor roll. He is a member of the National Honor Society, BETA Club, Spanish Club, student council, varsity baseball team, Young Life and Lynwood Baptist Church. He was treasurer for the BETA Club and President of the Spanish Club the previous school year. He is sponsored by VFW Post 3838. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hutteger of Cape Girardeau.

Chris McNutt

He is active in football and Young Life at Cape Central High School. He is recognized in the "Who's Who in America's High Schools" and the Duke University Tip Program. He is sponsored by Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club. His parents are Dr. and Mrs. J.D. McNutt.

Brandon West

He is attending Cape Central High School where he will be a senior this fall, and is active in varsity baseball, Lettermen's club, and Latin Club. He is active in American Legion Baseball, Young Life and attends Cape Bible Chapel. He is recognized in "Who's Who Among American High School Students." He is sponsored by Elks Lodge. His parents are Stan and Terri West.

Jason Bowers

He is a junior at Cape Central High School where he is a member of Lettermen Club, varsity basketball and baseball teams, BETA Club, vice president of the National Honor Society, A honor roll, Young Life, Fellowship of Christian Athhletes. He is listed among Who's Who Among American High School Students. He is sponsored by Cape West Rotary. He is the son of Mike and Debbie Bowers.

Tom Richards

He will be a senior at Cape Central High School this fall where he is a member of the National Honor Society, National Senior BETA Club and is listed in Who's Who in American High Schools. He plays on the varstiy basketball team and is a member of the Lettermen's Club. He is a member of Lynwood Baptist Church and the local chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is sponsored by Cape Lion's Club. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Richards of Cape Girardeau.

Michael L. Higgins

He attends Notre Dame High School where he is a member of the basketball team, and concert choir. He is a youth volunteer at St. Francis Medical Center, a member of youth ministry at St. Vincent's Church. He attended the World Youth Conference in Denver, Colo. He is an active lodge member of Camp Ondessonk, Belleville Diocese. He is sponsored by Knights of Columbus. He is the son of Thomas and Mary Higgins of Cape Girardeau.

Jeff Diebold

He attends Notre Dame High School where he is active of soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He is on the A honor roll and in the concert choir. He is student council treasurer. He is sponsored by Cape Girardeau Lion's Club. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Diebold of Scott City.

Shannon Kutz

He will be a senior at Notre Dame High School this fall where he is on the A honor roll and participated in basketball, baseball, the school's intramurals and concert choir. He also has played CYC basketball and participated in the Optimist Youth in Government Day. He is a member of St. Mary's Cathedral Parish. He is sponsored by American Legion Post 63. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kutz.

Taylor Lumsden

He is a student at Notre Dame High School where he participated in basketball, cross country, student council, and Math field day. He also participated in Youth in Government Day and is an announcer for Notre Dame baseball games. He is sponosred by Cape Girardeau Optimist Club. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lumsden of Scott City.

Robert Gardner Jr.

He attends Notre Dame High School where is on the staff of the school newspaper, yearbook staff and active in the school play. He is an Eagle Scout, a member of Order of the Arrow. He earned Bright Flight Scholarship. He is sponsored by Cape Girardeau Exchange Club. He is the son of Robert and Bernie Gardner.

Michael Dannenmueller

He attend Notre DAme High School where he participated in varsity basketball and was on the light crew for the school play and B honor roll. He is sponsored by Cape Girardeau Kiwanias Club. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dannenmueller of Scott City.
