Seventeen area teenagers will be among 960 attending the 1994 Missouri Boys State. It will start Saturday, and run through June 25.
The leadership program is held each year on the Campus of Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg.
It was established by the Missouri American Legion in 1938 as a way to give young Missourians a practical working knowledge of state government. Boys State employs the "learn by doing" method with instruction and first-hand experiences in law, law enforcement, legislature, journalism, government executive and campaigning.
Young men exhibiting outstanding leadership, character, scholarship, and citizenship are chosen by the American Legion and other civic groups throughout the state.
One hundred boys in 10 Southeast Missouri counties were selected to attend. Tom Giles of Cape Girardeau is the American Legion chairman for Boys State District 14.
