JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The state would transfer $4 million annually to a veterans fund from early childhood programs, under a bill receiving initial Senate approval.
The measure, endorsed by a 18-14 vote Tuesday, still requires final Senate passage before moving to the House.
Under the bill, $4 million of the roughly $9 million in unobligated money in the Children's Trust Fund would be transferred to the Veterans' Commission Capital Improvement Trust Fund to help bolster building projects in the budget year that starts July 1.
Similar transfers could be made in each of the three following budget years -- if the Children's Trust Fund had surplus funds available.
The veterans fund receives $3 million annually from casino fees. The bill would boost that funding to $7 million.
