Amy Wencewicz, a Southeast Missouri State University junior from Cape Girardeau, is one of 10 students from Missouri's public four-year colleges and universities to receive a 1992 Council on Public Higher Education For Missouri (COPHE) Scholarship.
The award, presented recently in Jefferson City by Gov. John Ashcroft, is based on academic performance and helps prepare students for teaching mathematics, science or a foreign language. The scholarship carries a $1,000 award and is to be used during the 1992-1993 academic year.
Scholarship recipients were chosen by a committee of representatives of COPHE institutions. Awards were based on student accomplishments at their respective college or university.
The scholarship program is intended to focus attention on the shortage of math, science and foreign language teachers, educators said.
COPHE is composed of all public four-year institutions in the state.
Wencewicz is majoring in secondary education at Southeast and is the daughter of Thomas Wencewicz, an assistant professor of mathematics at Southeast, and Dorothy Wencewicz, a teacher at the Early Childhood Center in Cape Girardeau.
