Southeast Missouri State University is sponsoring a series of programs during November to "celebrate the book."
The series begins Nov. 4 with the opening of an exhibition of handmade books by Caren Heft of Rancine, Wis. Heft has been involved in the production of books since 1982. Her work combines text forms, paper, unique and unexpected materials and objects into books, which are creative art.
The exhibit opens at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 with a reception for the artist. Both the reception and exhibition will be in the University Museum. The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 29.
Heft will also present a two-day workshop on hand bookmaking in the university art department. The workshop, Nov. 4-5, is open to the public. For more information, call 651-2143.
Nov. 5 at the University Center, Heft will present a lecture on "Artists' Books." Using slides of her work and work of other artists, Heft will present an overview of bookmaking as an art form.
Three other book lectures are planned in November.
On Nov. 12, Henry Sessoms of the department of English will discuss English bookmaking in the 15th and 16th centuries. The lecture is in the University Center Ballroom at 1 p.m.
On Nov. 19, Joan Feezor will present an illustrated lecture on issues in book and document conservation. The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. in the University Museum.
On Nov. 26, Roger Arpin of the department of mass communication will discuss the place of printing in contemporary society. The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the University Museum.
