Congratulations to SEMO Regional Planning which will celebrate its 30th anniversary later this month.

SEMO Regional Planning, which is headed by Tom Tucker, offers a valuable service to Cities and Counties in Southeast Missouri. They assist in planning, grant requests, comprehensive plans and wide range of other services.

Jackson has benefited a great deal over the years from the expertise offered by our friends at SEMO Regional Planning.

Business is good through the first quarter of 1998 in Jackson. Sales and Transportation tax receipts are up about 7 percent through April. This type of increase indicates that the local business community in continuing to thrive.

Our constant goal of orderly growth in Jackson will help ensure continued success for the local economy in the future.

The semi annual fix-up clean-up week in Jackson was once again a huge success. More than 150 tons of refuse was taken in during the week of May 4-9. This is three times the normal amount collected each week.

If you missed it last month don't worry we will do it again this fall. The pride Jackson residents take in keeping their property trash free is something for us all to be proud of.

You may have noticed that the fountain at the Courthouse square is once again operational. City of Jackson employees have fixed the fountain and replaced the lights to make it so we all can enjoy it this summer.

We have accepted the low bid to replace the Old Cape Rd. bridge over Goose Creek. Construction should begin this summer and completion is scheduled by the end of the year.

Traffic will have to be re-routed for a time during this major improvement. This project is funded with 80 percent state funds and 20 percent of budgeted City funds.

Upon completion the citizens of Jackson will enjoy a wider, safer bridge which will have a softer curve.

The Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual banquet on June 22. For tickets call Marilyn at the Chamber office 243-8131.

Our local chamber will be doing great things in the next few years to help existing business and attract new business. Lets all support our Chamber of Commerce.

The Youth Lifetime sports series is coming to our Jackson Park and Recreation Department. If your child is interested in bowling, golf or tennis contact Park Director Shane Anderson at City Hall. He has some summer fun programs for June and July that the kids will enjoy.

Another school year has quickly passed us by. Congratulations to all area graduates as you move from school to whatever you choose to do next. The sky is the limit and I wish you all much success.

The council meets every Monday at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall in Jackson. Your input and ideas are always welcome.
