The SEMO Major Case Squad has been deactivated in the investigation of the shooting death of Joshua Edward Dibert, according to a news release by Sgt. Jason Selzer of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
The Major Case Squad was called in after Dibert, 34, of East Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau, was found dead in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest early Friday morning.
Cape Girardeau police officers responding to a 2:18 a.m. call about shots fired in the area of William Street and Henderson Avenue found Dibert in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked near the intersection of Henderson Avenue and Good Hope Street, the squad reported.
Police do not have any suspects in the case, and in an email to the Southeast Missourian on Friday morning, Selzer said authorities do not know how many people may have been involved.
Selzer said at this stage of the investigation, police do not have reason to believe Dibert's death is related to other recent shootings in the area.
"At this time, we don't have anything that links this shooting to any other case," he said.
The Major Case Squad was deactivated Sunday. Cape Girardeau police will continue to investigate and follow up on any additional leads.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 335-6621.
