The Missouri Humanities Council has awarded Southeast Missouri State University a $2,544 grant to support the "Great Decisions in the Missouri Bootheel" program.
The program provides for study and discussion of U.S. foreign policy issues. Participants will meet weekly in groups in Cape Girardeau, Malden and Caruthersville.
Southeast faculty will explain current trends and issues in eight key areas and lead discussions of U.S. foreign policy options. When the program ends, opinion ballots will be collected and forwarded to the White House, members of Congress and departments of State and Defense.
This year's program topics include: "U.S. Agenda for the '90s: Domestic Needs, Global Priorities"; "Middle East After Desert Storm: As the Dust Settles"; "The Refugee Crisis: How Should the U.S. Respond?"; "Latin America's New Course: Bridge to Closer U.S. Ties,"; "Planet Earth: Dying Species, Disappearing Habitat"; "Africa South of the Sahara: Fresh Winds of Democracy"; "The AIDS Pandemic: Global Scourge, U.S. Challenge"; and "Breakup of the Soviet Union: U.S. Dilemmas."
Separate discussion groups will meet in Caruthersville, Malden and Cape Girardeau. The Caruthersville group will meet Tuesdays, the Cape Girardeau group will meet on Wednesdays and the Malden group will meet Thursdays.
The Cape Girardeau sessions will begin at 2 p.m. today in the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University. All sessions are free and open to the public.
Sessions in Malden will be held at the Bootheel Education Center. The Caruthersville program will be held at the public library.
