SEMO adds master's program, cuts option in health care program

Looking to tap into a growing need for management education, Southeast Missouri State University will roll out a master of science degree in organizational management in the fall semester.

Southeast's board of regents last week approved the program, as well as a new minor in biological and medical sciences entrepreneurship, and deleted an option in a health care program.

The master of science degree will be offered through the Donald L. Harrison College of Business.

Fred Janzow, vice provost and dean of the School of Graduate Studies, said studies show there are a group of people in the region who want to move into management positions but who are not well served by an MBA program.

"We do have evidence there is a fairly sizable group that could take advantage of that and give themselves a good chance of moving up in whatever organization they're in," he said.

The degree focuses on management and excludes accounting, finance, marketing, economics and management information systems.

Southeast provost Ron Rosati said the degree program is perfect for people seeking a supervisory role in retail, services and related business sectors.

Janzow said the advantage from the university's side is there is no need for new curriculum, and it requires no new faculty to deliver the program.

The minor in biological and medical sciences entrepreneurship, too, was driven by demand. It is set to launch in the fall semester.

With the development of the Douglas C. Greene Southeast Missouri State University Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Southeast's emphasis on entrepreneurship has increased, Janzow said. The curriculum, he said, can be adapted to a variety of disciplines.

Southeast will drop its adult health clinical nurse specialist/care manager option from the master of science in nursing degree beginning in August. The option has been offered every other year, and enrollment has varied from four to six students per cohort.
