After two threats to sell St. Vincent's Seminary on the courthouse steps, an attorney for the Vincentian Fathers says the matter will be settled in private.

The first sale was scheduled Sept. 5 and the second on Thursday. Instead of auctioning the property, David Roth, attorney for the Vincentians, announced Thursday that the sale was discontinued.

He said the Colonial Cape Girardeau Foundation, a group that bought the property more than a year ago but couldn't come up with full payment, is close to making a deal with the Vincentians.

"They have made progress on gathering support from the community," Roth said. "The Vincentians are very pleased to see the community rally around this project."

A private agreement on another extension has been reached. Roth said he plans to make an announcement about the sale in the next two weeks.
