JACKSON -- The "garbage gang" is coming to Jackson's Knights of Columbus Hall Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Missouri University Extension staff will present the day-long program on household solid waste management entitled "The Rotten Truth - Dealing With Trash." The program is designed to help update those interested in home waste management and recycling and create awareness of the need for all citizens to work with their community and county to meet new and more stringent regulations.
There will be five program segments: Truth or Consequences, an overview; The Environmental Shopper Starts Here, pre-purchasing decisions; Recycling 101, basic how-tos of preparing items for recycling; Storage Beyond the Pile-it System, home recycling set-up, composting and hazardous material storage; and Trash in the Real World, long-term costs and effecting decision makers.
"There is a real cost to all of us if household waste is not managed wisely and that cost is in terms of real dollars in terms of taxes and cost of services as well as environmental degradation. We can hold these costs to a minimum if we work together," said Missouri University Extension Specialists Susan Mills of Jackson.
Interested persons should contact the Cape Girardeau County Extension Center at Jackson at 243-3581 to no later than Friday, Nov. 1. There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of lunch served by the Jackson K.C., handouts and program costs. Checks should be made out to: Missouri University Extension and mailed to: Missouri University Extension, P.O. Box 408, Jackson, Mo. 63755.
