Segregation-era signs discovered in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Workers remodeling an old dime store uncovered a relic found most often in museums and history books: the words "WHITE" and "COLORED" painted over spots where water fountains once hung. "Well, I was pretty amazed," said Charles Moenning, the head of construction on a project to turn the old S.H. Kress store into loft apartments and retail space. The black letters stand out from the beige plaster wall, recalling the days when segregation ruled the South. Mayor Jim Dailey wants the signs preserved in a museum. Kress built the store on Main Street in 1943 and it remained a five-and-dime until the 1960s.

Flags from Kennedy limo sell for $450,000 at auction

NEW YORK -- Two flags that flew from the convertible President John F. Kennedy was riding in when he was assassinated in 1963 sold at auction Saturday for $450,000. The banners, one an American flag, the other bearing the presidential seal, were among the most-sought items at the three-day auction of memorabilia from the lives of John and Jacqueline Kennedy. Guernsey's auction house declined to identify the buyer.

Teen accused of killing father to hide bad grades

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A 15-year-old boy allegedly killed his father, then set their home on fire because he was afraid his father would find out he was failing some classes, prosecutors said. Ryan Watts was charged Friday with murdering his father, 50-year-old John E. Bruner, who was initially believed to have died in the fire earlier this week. He was charged as an adult. Watts was arrested Wednesday after an autopsy determined that Bruner died from multiple gunshot wounds and not from the fire, Santa Clara police said. If convicted, Watts faces life in prison. He's ineligible for the death penalty because he's a juvenile.
