Scouts traditionally complete a service project for Camp Lewellen in Silva, Mo., in Wayne County every year. This year, scouts and leaders from Troops 2, 5, 21 and 8 have been building the Henry Voss Memorial Amphitheatre to replace the amphitheatre that was removed in the 1980s.
The cost of construction is $6,000. To offset the cost, McDonald's is offering an all-you-can-eat breakfast of hotcakes and sausage (inside dining only) from 6 to 10:30 a.m. daily through May 31. Tickets can be bought from Jerry Siemers at 334-7765, Curt Johns at 334-0007 or any Troop 8 Boy Scout. The offer is good in Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Marble Hill, Benton, Sikeston, Miner, Charleston, Advance, Malden, Portageville and Dexter.
Voss was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow and a leader of Troop 8 from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Men's Club, the troop's chartering organization.
Predicted to be completed in time for summer camp, the amphitheater will serve about 1,800 boys annually, seating 360 at a time.
