Scott County sees slight year-over-year increase in sales tax

BENTON, Mo. -- Although tax revenues are still behind for the year in Scott County, there was a slight increase in February over the same month last year, the Sikeston Standard Democrat reported.

Receipts from the month of February totaled $158,208.23, up from $147,688.86 in February 2009.

"But we're still down $8,201.64 overall from the same point last year," said Donnie Kiefer, commissioner.

Commissioners aren't sure what to attribute February's increase to, but Commissioner Dennis Ziegenhorn noted it could just be people paying late from the previous month.

"But we hope it continues to grow," he said.

Also during the commissioners meeting on Thursday, officials looked at the budget for the year. "We have $401,000 budgeted for 2010 and we are at about $134,000," said Presiding Commissioner Jamie Burger. "I'm pleased that we're basically on track."

To ensure the county stays on track, commissioners had a discussion with representatives from the treasurer and circuit clerk's offices and sheriff's department to talk about billing for reimbursements, mostly from the state.

"We're trying really hard to make sure that our revenues don't lag," said Burger. "We work really hard to control our expenses, and we have to work just as hard to receive our revenues. It is so crucial that we stay on time and up-to-date with our reimbursements and requests."

The main reason for this is the budget situation Missouri is in, said Burger. "At some point, they may start holding checks," he said. "If that happens, I want to make sure we are up-to-date."

Representatives of the offices agreed and discussed steps needed to ensure all requests are kept current.

"I think this was a good meeting for all the key people involved in doing this," said Burger.

Kiefer added. "I think communication is key, so feel free to talk to me and other commissioners with any questions at any time."
