Scott County resident requests better signage

BENTON, Mo. -- A Scott County resident is asking for more signs to bring a road closure to motorists attention.

"There is no real warning," said Richard Riley, in regards to a road off County Road 505, near Kelly Schools, while speaking with county commissioners at Thursday's meeting. "Someone needs to block it off."

Riley pointed out a woman ran through the barricade on Wednesday. He also said that on a typical morning, there are 12 or so cars that turn around in his driveway.

"That's one of the heaviest-traveled road in all of Scott County," said Riley.

The road is closed due to culverts being placed in the ditch. Commissioner Donnie Kiefer noted that Highway Department workers were already working Thursday morning to make more signs and barricades.

"We'll get it taken care of," he assured.

In other news on Thursday, county developer and emergency management director Joel Evans provided commissioners with some updates. They include:

Letters were passed out to residents in the Salcedo area who have asked to be part of a water district for several years. The letter was to inform them they can sign up for part of Public Water Supply District No. 4, so long as 10 homes sign up and each pay the $150 hookup fee.

"There has been positive feedback from everybody," said Evans. He said the individual who has been collecting the letters will likely turn them in next week.

The name of a Scott County soldier declared dead during World War II will be added to Scott County's War Memorial.

Last year, Evans was advised that William Welty's name was not included on the memorial.

"He wasn't on the original killed in action list because he was declared missing in action in May 1945, and then declared dead the following year," said Evans. In fact, Welty's family just received his war medals.

In looking at the plaques, there is space at the bottom of the fourth, where Welty's name would fall alphabetically. While the cost to recast the entire plaque is about $1,000, a company has said it could cast Welty's name on a sheet that can then be screwed to the plaque for a lower price, although Evans has not yet received an estimate.

"We should definitely get Welty's name on there," said Commissioner Dennis Ziegenhorn.
