Scott City's Summerfest starts Friday

Scott City's annual Summerfest celebration is here once again and this year it offers activities for people and their four-legged friends.

According to Scott City parks and recreation director Phyllis Crump, her department has been working on Summerfest since April. She said it is probably the biggest event that the city holds.

"I would say it grows every year," Crump said.

Everything gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday with a parade that starts outside Bob's Foodliner at 2100 Main St. and will continue on until reaching the parking lot of the Scott City pool.

Walkers in the parade include local politicians, church groups and the local Boy Scout troop, who will serve as the color guard. The parade will also feature antique tractors, four-wheelers, a fire truck and convertibles carrying Junior Miss Summerfest and Miss Summer Teen.

For the first time, pets are allowed to walk in the parade, as long as they are on a leash.

Following the parade, the competitions to determine the next Little Mr. and Miss, Junior Miss Summerfest and Miss Summer Teen will be held at the fairgrounds in Scott City Park.

At 8 p.m. a washer contest will be held in the park, as will karaoke and a musical performance by Charlie's Music Revue.

Summerfest continues on Saturday at 8 a.m. with a swim meet at the Scott City pool.

Another new addition to Summerfest, the pet contests, will take place at 1 p.m. at the park's horseshoe pavilion. Pet contest categories include best dressed, best trick, biggest couch potato and pet owner look-alike. Registration is at noon.

There will be prizes given to the winners of the contests, but everybody can enter to win prizes in the raffles that will be offered and people can get their photo taken with their pet.

Around 2 p.m., Summerfest patrons will get a visit from an Arch helicopter and at 4 p.m. Brian Rogers from Xtreme Motors in Cape Girardeau will give a car racing demonstration.

More competitions take place Saturday with the junior talent show at 5 p.m. and the senior talent show at 6 p.m.

Charlie's Music Revue will entertain again at 7 p.m., followed by Brook Burrows, who recently played Cape Girardeau's Tunes at Twilight, at 8 p.m.

In addition, Summerfest will have familiar summer food for sale, including turkey legs, barbecue, hamburgers, curly fries, Polish sausage, ribs, funnel cakes and cotton candy.

There will also be various crafts, novelties, rides and games, including washer contests at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Scott City's 28th Summerfest will come to a close at 10 p.m. with a fireworks display.
