Temperatures that topped out in the mid-80s and no rain provided ideal weather for the dozens of Scott City residents who spent their Memorial Day afternoon at the newly renovated Scott City Pool.
By 2 p.m. the official count was 51 people -- the pool opened at 1 p.m. and stayed open until 6 p.m. Pool workers said Memorial Day's crowd was about average since the pool opened earlier this month.
Trafton and Laura Clark visited the pool Monday afternoon with Trafton's mother, Flo Ann Clark, after returning from a weekend camping trip to the Current River that morning.
"We're just glad the sun's out," said Flo Ann Clark. She and Laura spent most of their time sunbathing, while Trafton enjoyed a dip in the water. Most weekends the family would be camping at Lake Wappapello, Flo Ann Clark said, but this year they didn't go, so they decided to finish off the three-day weekend at the pool, which she said was greatly improved by the $37,000 renovation that touched up the pool house and installed a new pool slide.
Danny Lee Warren Jr. brought his 12-year-old son Bobby Joe and friends Gordon Bradley, 11, and Dillon Dougan, 15. The elder Warren said coming to the pool is a Memorial Day tradition for him and his son.
"We've got nothing better to do," Warren said. He said he's attended the pool every year since its opening, and that the improvements have made a big difference.
They were joined on a short food break by 12-year-old Nicholas Rogers. "This is my Memorial Day," Rogers said.
