Scott City prepares for citywide yard sale

The Scott City Chamber of Commerce expects this year's edition of the annual Citywide Yard Sale to be bigger and better than those in the past, said yard sale organizer and Chamber of Commerce member Chaundra Mason.

Mason, owner of Paradise Flowers in Scott City, said she hopes for more interest in this year's sale, since the Chamber of Commerce advertised the event in newspapers outside the immediate area as well as locally. This will be the sale's fourth year. The sale will take place Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

People around Scott City and the immediate area outside the city limits host their own yard sales during the event and register with the chamber of commerce for inclusion in a yard sale guide, which is available at Scott City businesses. Mason said this year about 70 people registered their yard sales.

Sales will probably begin at around 7 a.m. each day and last "however long they can hold out from the heat," Mason said.

Even if the extreme hot weather continues into next weekend, Mason said she doesn't expect it to have much effect on the sale.

"I don't think it's going to bother them a bit," Mason said of yard-sale enthusiasts. "They're out looking for a deal."

As always a large group sale will take place at the caboose parking lot on Main Street, across from the VFW hall. Mason said at least 10 people will set up sales in the parking lot.
