The late Scott City businessman Don Roth will be memorialized with a day set aside in his honor.
At the Monday night meeting of the Scott City Council, Mayor Tim Porch signed the proclamation setting aside May 7 as a day to remember and celebrate Roth.
Porch expressed the sentiments of many in the community who saw Roth not only as a fixture in the business climate of Scott City and Old Illmo, but as a great philanthropist.
"He was a fine member of the community," said Porch. "We're going to miss him badly."
Porch presented the proclamation to members of Roth's family.
Carolyn Pendergrass with the Kiwanis Club in Scott City also announced the organization was awaiting final approval for a shelter in the city park in memory of Roth.
In other business Porch appointed a new member to the city council. Kirk Lewis, a pipeline technician, will replace Ron Cummins in Ward 3, who had to resign due to scheduling conflicts. This will be Lewis' first time on the council.
An election will be held in April to fill the position.
Council members also reviewed a list of roads to be paved in city's upcoming paving program. The city has plans to pave stretches of varying length on several roads, with Roth Drive receiving the most paving.
The council will now begin the bidding process for the paving projects.
Also, the council unanimously approved an ordinance changing the city's zoning rules.
The ordinance sets out guidelines for dimensions of buildings and lot sizes while making exceptions for those buildings in subdivisions where the developer followed proper city procedure or for those building constructed where a previous structure stood within 12 months of that structure's demolition.
