Plans have been delayed on a Scott City Main Street construction project.
At the first Scott City council meeting in May, city administrator Ron Eskew said construction would begin June 1 on Main Street from Crites Street to Chester Avenue and continue through Sept. 1.
On June 3, Brian Holt, resident engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation, notified city officials paving will begin the week of June 15 instead. Fronabarger Concreters has been subcontracted to complete that portion of the work.
Fronabarger will replace paved approaches to the roadway from driveways. The majority of those approaches are east of the construction site, but Holt said the constuction overlaps slightly.
Chester Bross Construction Co. will do the asphalt work in late July.
Holt said the shoulder on the south side of Main Street is being used to add the turn lane between the lanes of traffic, and it will extend from Crites to Chester.
Mayor Tim Porch said the construction still is scheduled to wrap up quickly toward the end of summer to avoid inconveniencing the school.
In addition to expanding the roadways, driveways will be reconstructed to reduce pooling water that runs into the gutters.
There will be some inconvenience to businesses with driveways along that route, but David Wyman, an engineer for MoDOT, said the driveways will be redirected so businesses still are accessible to customers.
At a city council meeting in January, the council approved about $270,000 for MoDOT's assistance in the project. Other money will come from transportation funding.
By paying for the entire project, Scott City will take ownership of Main Street and be responsible for its upkeep once construction is complete.
