The family that reads together deserves credit for the total effort.
In fact, the number of hours a family logs reading is something the Scott City Public Library is encouraging through Nov. 18.
The library has started a Read Around the House program to spur families into reading newspapers, books, magazines and periodicals on a daily basis.
The concept comes from a magazine that library Assistant Director Martha Mangels uncovered recently.
The Jackson Public Library has just finished a summer reading program that saw unprecedented success. Jackson Children's Librarian Judy Holmes said children read a total of 9,000 books over the summer.
Jackson also sponsored a Smokey Bear birthday card contest that required participants to become patrons of the library. Three bicycles were given away in a drawing for children who qualified for the reading program.
Scott City sponsors a Summer Story hour and provides videos for children who spend time in the library. Scott City will hold an open house Sept. 24. There are also demonstrations provided during the Summer Story hour.
The Scott City Library has passed out literature at local schools to encourage individuals to take advantage of the vast reading material.
Jackson awards certificates to youths who complete a reading program for their age group. "The number of pages required has to do with the age of the child," said Holmes.
