SCOTT CITY -- It's time for Scott City area musicians to limber up lips and fingers.
The parks department is seeking musicians for a community band, Parks Director Phyllis Spinks said.
A community band planning meeting is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the high school.
High School Band Director Jim Arnold and piano teacher Gloria Schumer will help in forming the new group.
Arnold said he would direct the adult members of a community band and would arrange the music to fit the size of the band.
"The goal is to have an opportunity to play and enjoy music," Arnold said. "We could have music in the park to provide some good, wholesome family fun."
Schumer said a lot of area folks have musical instruments and this would let them play for the fun of it.
"We could start out playing for patriotic events," Schumer said, adding that she would like to see the band play a concert monthly.
Arnold sees the band playing a monthly concert in the city park next summer and could also play during the annual Summerfest celebration in June.
A community band could allow for the area's singers to perform, Arnold said.
Arnold intends to recruit high school band members to fill holes in the community band.
Spinks said several local service organizations have indicated they will help with the project, including building a band stand in the park.
She may be contacted for more information at 264-3411.
