Scott City's newest council member has been delivering babies for Southeast Hospital for the past four years, which should have prepared her for the occasional pain, uncertainty and rewards of public service.

Teresa Crump, 30, a Scott City High School graduate, was appointed to the Scott City Council at the its regular meeting Monday to replace John Rogers who quit the council to accept a position as public works director.

She was nominated by Mayor Jerry Cummins and approved by all but one member, Brenda Moyers who voted against the nomination because she knew nothing of Crump's qualifications.

Because Rogers was just reelected, Crump will serve nearly the full two-year term.

Crump moved back to Scott City with her husband Ernie, a sheet metal worker, and sons Trey, 9, Nick, 6, and Cory, 3, in August 1994. She has been an obstetrician technician at Southeast Hospital for four years, but has no experience in public office.

Crump said she doesn't know exactly why she was nominated, only that she was asked by two council members if she was interested in filling the vacant position. She said she has a friend on the council who first told her about the position.

She said she's "not as clear" as she would like to be about her new responsibilities, but would like to be able to give something back to her home town.

"I want to help out the city," she said.
